Outside Turn in Detail sn0134

  • These charts show in general how Lead signals an Outside Turn and how Follower turns, and may need to be adapted for the relevant move.
  • The first chart shows Lead's left hand holding Follower's right hand, but either of Lead's hands could be holding either of Follower's hands.
  • Lead's footwork can vary for Steps S5 to S8. If it is not mentioned specifically it can be Step in Place (as shown), or Cucaracha Step. See relevant chart for Lead's footwork.
  • Follower's footwork is similar to a Pivot Turn.
  • Steps S1 to S4 are not shown because these can vary from move to move.

S5) Lead's left hand raises Follower's right hand above, and to the right side (relative to Follower) of Follower's head.

Hands are Palm to Palm signalling a CW Turn.

Lead starts a CW Halo.

Follower turns 180° approx. as Follower's left foot steps out to Follower's right side.

S6) Lead's left hand continues the CW Halo but reduces the radius as the turn progresses.

Follower twists 90° CW on their left leg. Follower's right foot turns 180° on the spot.

S7) First - During the last part of the CW Halo the radius is small.

Lead's left hand and Follower's right hand change to Turn Hold.

Follower Spins 90° CW on their right foot, powered by their left foot, to face Lead.

Second - Lead's left hand brings Follower's right hand down to waist height.

Hands go back to Hook Hold.

S8) Pause.

  • Instead of doing Palm to Palm to signal the turn, Lead can do a Halo (with a constant radius) with hands in Turn Hold.
  • The following chart shows an Outside Turn started in the Crossed Hand Shake, Right Over hold. All Outside Turns done in two handed holds would be done in a similar way.

S5) Lead's hands raise Follower's hands above Follower's head.

Both pairs of hands are Palm to Palm signalling a CW Turn.

Follower turns 180° approx. as Follower's left foot steps out to Follower's right side.

S6) Follower twists 90° CW on their left leg. Follower's right foot turns 180° on the spot.

S7) Follower Spins 90° CW on their right foot, powered by their left foot, to face Lead.

Second - Lead's hands bring Follower's hands down to waist height.

Hands go back to Hook Hold.

S8) Pause.
